How Many People Can Fit in a SpaceX Starship for a Mars Mission? 🤔
Ever wondered how to estimate the maximum crew size for a SpaceX Starship heading to Mars? Let's dive into it! 🌌
The Starship has about 1000 m³ of usable space (excluding fuel). To figure out how many people can comfortably live and work on board, we’ll consider:
1️⃣ Volume for supplies and equipment
2️⃣ Living quarters and common areas
3️⃣ Mission duration and consumables per person
Breakdown:
Food: NASA recommends 1.83 kg/day per person. For a 910-day mission, that’s 1,665 kg (~2 tons) per crew member!
Oxygen & Water: With advanced recycling tech like electrolysis, Sabatier reactors, and ISS-level water systems, oxygen and water requirements are minimal, but let’s add reserves for safety.
Equipment: Refueling systems and cargo take up about 4.5 decks (approximately 500 m³).
Living Space: The remaining 2.5 decks (~500 m³) house the crew, allowing private quarters for couples, common areas, and exercise facilities.
Estimated Crew Size:
Based on my calculations in "Colonizing Mars," a mission can accommodate 10–15 people comfortably, depending on the layout and mission specifics.
Key Considerations:
Efficient use of space for both living and work.
Enough supplies and contingency reserves for a 910-day journey (round trip).
